Concrete Driveways in the Kansas City Metro

A residential concrete driveway in the Kansas City area should be poured at least four inches thick, five to six if anything heavier than a pickup will sit on it, using 4,000 PSI air-entrained concrete. The air entrainment matters in this climate. Those microscopic air pockets give freezing water somewhere to expand, which is why a good slab here survives dozens of freeze-thaw cycles a year without scaling. Reinforcement and correctly spaced control joints decide where the concrete cracks. All concrete cracks. The craft is making it crack where you planned.

Most of our driveway work is removal and replacement. We break out and haul off the old slab, look hard at the subgrade underneath, regrade and compact, add aggregate base where the soil needs it, then form, pour, finish, and cut joints. The subgrade step is where driveways in this region are won or lost. Eastern Jackson County soil takes on water in spring and gives it up in August, and a new slab over an unfixed base fails the same way the old one did.

Price comes down to square footage, thickness, how much old surface has to come out, whether the base needs rebuilding, slope and drainage, and how easily equipment can reach the site. A straight rectangular replacement costs the least per foot. Turnarounds, widenings, and decorative finishes add cost, but they're far cheaper to do during the pour than to add later. We check all of it on the site visit, and the written proposal spells out the scope so you know what the price covers.

Common Questions

Concrete Driveways FAQs

How long before I can use my new concrete driveway?

Foot traffic after a day or two, passenger vehicles after about a week, full cure at 30 days. With a faster-curing mix, which costs more, cars can go on it in 2 to 3 days. If an RV or a loaded truck will sit on the driveway, tell us at the site visit so we pour that area thicker. Cold weather stretches those times, and we schedule and protect the pour accordingly.

Will my new driveway crack?

All concrete cracks. The goal is controlling where. Properly cut control joints give the slab straight, planned lines to crack along instead of random ones across the surface. Early random cracking is a different story, and it almost always traces back to a poor base, missing joints, or a bad mix. Our written guarantee covers that difference.

What does a concrete driveway cost in the KC metro?

It swings enough with size, tear-out, base condition, and finish that a number given blind would probably mislead you. The onsite proposal is free, and it puts the real price for your driveway in writing. As a general rule concrete costs more than asphalt up front, and spread over its lifetime it often comes out even or ahead.

Can you pour a driveway in winter?

Down to a point. Cold-weather pours use heated water or accelerators in the mix and insulated blankets during cure, and we never pour on frozen subgrade. Below about 20 degrees sustained it stops being worth the risk, and we'll say so rather than force a date. Late fall pours are routine.
