Asphalt Driveways in the Kansas City Metro
Cracks across the surface, crumbling edges, patches that stopped holding. When an asphalt driveway gets to that point, full replacement is usually the right call, and it's most of the residential asphalt work we do. We tear the old pavement out, haul it away, and fix what's underneath, because a soft base turns into a dip in the new surface within a couple of winters. Once the base is compacted and weak spots are built back up with rock, two to three inches of hot-mix asphalt goes down and gets rolled tight while it's still hot, which is the step bargain crews tend to rush.
Asphalt has a real advantage in Missouri weather because it flexes with the ground instead of fighting it. The clay under most Kansas City yards is always taking on water or giving it back, and the ground moves as it does. Winter here thaws and refreezes constantly, and a flexible pavement rides that movement better than a rigid slab. When damage does show up, asphalt is quick and inexpensive to repair. Asphalt also costs noticeably less than the same footprint in concrete, which matters on a long or wide driveway. The tradeoff is that asphalt asks for more attention over the years and concrete needs very little.
Most of what separates a good asphalt driveway from a cheap one lives at the edges, which is why we walk the site before quoting anything and put the full scope in a free written proposal. Unsupported edges along the yard get rolled at an angle so they hold up when a tire runs off the pavement. Where the pavement meets the garage floor, it has to land flush, or you scrape coming in and trap water at the door. And the street tie-in gets worked until you pull in without feeling the seam.

Asphalt Driveways FAQs
How soon can we park on a new asphalt driveway?
Usually the same day. Once the asphalt is compacted and has cooled, often within a few hours, it can take your car, but if you can give it a day or two, that's better for the surface. Heat slows the cooling, so we'll give you a time on paving day. Through the first season, be gentle with the surface. Get the car rolling before you turn the wheel, set trailer jacks and kickstands on a board, and park anything heavy somewhere else.
How long will an asphalt driveway last?
A well-built residential driveway in this climate is good for 15 to 20 years, and careful owners get more. What kills driveways early is water: open cracks that feed the base through a few winters until it moves. Keep water draining off the surface and deal with damage when it shows up, and the driveway reaches the far end of that range.
How thick should a residential asphalt driveway be?
Two to three inches of compacted hot-mix asphalt over four to six inches of compacted aggregate base is the standard for cars and pickups in this area. The base does more work than most people expect. It spreads the load and drains water away from the pavement, which is why we spend real time on it during a replacement. If you park a heavy trailer, boat, or RV, tell us at the site visit and we'll thicken the section where it sits.
Do you actually schedule single residential driveways?
Yes, all season long. Residential driveways are a regular part of our schedule, not filler between commercial jobs. We may offer a couple of date options that fit the weather and our paving schedule. If your driveway pairs with a parking pad or a widening, mention it when you call.
