About Our Work In Oak Grove

Local Knowledge.
KC Metro Standards.

Oak Grove's I-70 interchange at Exit 28 is the next one east of Grain Valley's Exit 24, so our yard on Eagles Parkway is a short run from town. By the mapped route, South Broadway is roughly 12 minutes and about seven miles away. That distance matters before the job and after it. Wendell and Daniel, who handle our estimating together, can get out to measure a driveway or walk a commercial lot without waiting until a crew happens to be passing through. A second look after the pour is a quick trip too, which counts for something while our one-year warranty on labor and workmanship is in force.

In Oak Grove, Public Works regulates all construction in the city's right-of-way and holds it to current APWA standards along with the city's own 2018 Standard Specifications and Design Criteria for Utility and Street Construction. In 2026 we did all of the concrete on the City of Oak Grove's street program, working under the paving contractor that held the contract. Building to a written public spec teaches a crew to get the grade and the base right, because the finish on top only lasts as long as what is under it. We bring that same approach to private driveways, pads and parking lots in town. Base, drainage and slope get looked at on every one of those jobs, residential or commercial.

The Census Bureau's American Community Survey dates close to a quarter of Oak Grove's homes to the 1970s and about 4 in 10 to before 1980, so a driveway or front walk original to one of those houses may be 50 years old or close to it. Sibley, a deep loess soil whose subsoil is silty clay loam averaging 30 to 35 percent clay, takes its USDA type location from a spot on the north edge of Oak Grove. Once an old slab is out, we check the subgrade and rebuild any base that has gone soft ahead of the new pour. Lots that take truck traffic, especially along Route F where tractor-trailers run between U.S. 50 and I-70, usually need heavy-duty concrete, which for us typically means 8 to 10 inches, depending on many factors. A standard mix is usable about 7 days after the pour, or after 2 to 3 days if you pay more for a faster-curing mix. Full-strength cure takes 30 days.

Common Questions

Paving In Oak Grove: FAQs

Where can an RV or trailer pad go on an Oak Grove lot?

The city's FAQ gives two choices. Boats, RVs, trailers and campers may be stored in the driveway, or behind the front building line and no closer than seven feet to the side property line, and either way they must sit on concrete or asphalt. Corner lots have other requirements on top of that. Any addition to an existing driveway needs an approved Driveway Permit, and paved driveway width for a single-family or duplex home is capped at 35 feet within the exterior setback. We lay the pad out to fit those lines, and before any forms go up we confirm the current requirements with the city.

Can I just add rock to widen my old gravel drive?

Not under Oak Grove's current rules. The city's FAQ says new gravel driveways are not allowed, and a gravel drive that was legally permitted when it went in can stay if you maintain it, but it can't get any bigger. Vehicles also have to park on a paved surface, not on the grass. If you need more room, paving is the way to get it, and we will give you a free written proposal for concrete or asphalt and work through the Driveway Permit the city requires for any new driveway, alteration or addition.

Whose permit do I need if my driveway comes off South Broadway?

Most likely MoDOT's. Route F, known as South Broadway through town, is a state highway under MoDOT's authority, and MoDOT requires a permit to build a driveway or change an existing one on its right-of-way, including changes in width, grade, location or surface type. On city streets, Oak Grove requires an approved right-of-way permit before work that open-cuts, tunnels or bores in the city's right-of-way,. We confirm the current requirements with the city and MoDOT on each job.

Does rebuilding curb and sidewalk in Oak Grove mean adding ramps too?

The city code says it does. Section 405.435 requires access ramps meeting ADA standards whenever new curbing or sidewalks are built or rebuilt, subject to review by the City Engineer, and for us that means getting the slopes right so the accessible route works. The curb and the walk themselves fall under Section 510.030, which sets public curb and gutter at 24 inches wide in Portland cement concrete built to APWA Section 2209, and sidewalks per APWA Section 2301 with a contraction joint every 4 feet and an expansion joint every 100 feet. Having done all of the concrete on Oak Grove's 2026 street program, we price public frontage with these sections in hand. For a private walk or a business frontage, we confirm the current requirements with the city ahead of pricing, so nothing has to be torn out later.
