KC Metro Standards.
Shawnee has added large warehouse space at K-7 and 43rd Street, down near the Kansas River. Standard Motor Products opened its national distribution center there in June 2025, in a cross-dock building of about 575,000 square feet at Hunt Midwest's Heartland Logistics Park. Hunt Midwest lists that building with 58 dock doors and 190-foot truck courts, and Westlink Business Center sits just east of K-7 on the same stretch of 43rd. The concrete in a truck court suffers most where trailers swing in toward the doors and where landing gear rests on the slab between loads. Our own crews build heavy-duty truck lanes, dock aprons, and warehouse paving, and the pours get phased around whichever doors you need open. A truck leaving Grain Valley reaches central Shawnee in about 40 minutes, and the 43rd Street parks take closer to an hour.
In Johnson County the Kansas River flood plain runs one to two miles wide, and the 43rd Street parks sit on that bottomland. USDA soil maps put the Heartland Logistics Park address on Eudora and Bismarckgrove silt loams, river-laid soils mapped as occasionally flooded, and the road work the city and KDOT lined up for the park in 2020 included raising 43rd Street above the floodplain. Farther east, around City Hall on Johnson Drive, the maps change to Sharpsburg, an upland soil formed in loess with a subsoil close to 40 percent clay. USDA flags that clay for low strength and shrink-swell, and it flags both the river soils and the Sharpsburg for frost action, so water that gets under a slab can heave it in a cold snap. On the river silt we put most of the effort into compaction and base depth, and on the upland clay we watch subgrade moisture and joint spacing closely.
Shawnee's housing covers a long stretch of years. By the Census Bureau's estimate, nearly a quarter of Shawnee's homes went up in the 1960s and 70s, and east-side neighborhoods like Wedgewood, near 75th and Quivira, date from that period. Any original concrete still in place there is around 50 years old, and on a drive that age we look at what's underneath before quoting a straight tear-out and replace. Out west the city is still turning open land into lots, and in March 2025 the planning commission recommended a 62-lot subdivision called Village at Clear Creek at 71st Street and Clare Road.

Paving In Shawnee: FAQs
Trailer landing gear is punching into the asphalt at our K-7 warehouse. What's the fix?
Usually it's concrete where the weight sits. Landing gear sets the front of a loaded trailer on two small feet, and asphalt softens enough in summer heat to let them sink. We can pour concrete pads or a full strip along the row where trailers drop, and put the dock apron in concrete if it isn't already, while leaving sound asphalt in the drive lanes alone. If your site sits on the river silt near 43rd Street, we size the base under that concrete for the soil. The pours can be phased so trailers always have a place to park.
Our site is in the Kansas River bottoms near 43rd Street. Does that change how the pavement gets built?
It can. The USDA soil survey maps the ground at Heartland Logistics Park and Westlink as Eudora and Bismarckgrove silt loams. For local roads, USDA puts both in its very limited class, giving frost action and flooding as the reasons and adding low strength and shrink-swell for the Bismarckgrove part. Before pricing the slab we check how the subgrade compacts and what base thickness the soil calls for, and we make sure water has somewhere to go. If the work falls inside the mapped floodplain, Shawnee's floodplain development permit covers grading, fill and excavation, and the city's checklist asks for plans sealed by a Kansas registered professional engineer that show any new pavement in the flood hazard area. Before any work starts, we get the latest from Shawnee's Development Engineering Division.
Does cutting into the curb change the permit for a Shawnee driveway job?
Sometimes it adds a second one. Any driveway repair or replacement inside the right-of-way needs the city's right-of-way driveway permit, whether a resident or a contractor does the work. Cutting into the street pavement or the curb and gutter falls under the city's roadway excavation permit, so we check whether a job needs both. Shawnee asks for 48 hours to process a permit and 24 hours' notice to schedule each inspection. Restoration has to be finished before the final inspection, so we close out the curb and yard work before we call it in. Rules change, so we go over them with Shawnee again when we write the proposal.
We're in Perimeter Park near 83rd and K-7. Can we fix our lot in phases instead of all at once?
Yes. The Shawnee EDC calls Perimeter Park the city's first major business and industrial park. When a lot has been in service a long time, the damage is usually worst in a few places first, often the truck entrance and the dock apron. We can saw-cut and replace the worst concrete panels, patch or mill and overlay the asphalt drive lanes, and lay out a plan that spreads the rest over several years. Each phase gets its own price in the written proposal, which makes it easier to budget year by year. Wendell or Daniel walks the site with you and ranks the work by what's failing worst.
